AWD Course Report

DANISHKADAH, Disability Resource and Development (DRD) and Hochiminh Deaf Association (HDA) jointly arranged Accessible Web Development (AWD) course at DRD, Hochiminh City, Vietnam.

A 10 days (23 February - 05 March 2009) course on AWD was organized at DRD. There were total 28 trainees, including seven students and officers with physical impairments, 8 members of HDA, one with visual impairment, eight volunteers and three teachers from schools for the Deaf - divided into two shifts. 17 trainees in the morning shift class and 11 at night shift class.

We were excited to see that most of the trainees were happy to have this opportunity and loving to learn new skills. One trainee with physical impairment said "I thank you very much for organizing the training course like that. This is the first time I could have my private lessons besides high school time". Student in 2nd shift were working and had no opportunity to learn from institutes, therefore we had the 2nd shift in night to give them opportunity to learn new skills.

The study program included the basic structures of a website development with HTML / XHTML and CSS. The course was taught in way that enabled trainee to develop website keeping the accessibility issues in mind. We encourage trainee to help their organization in developing accessible websites. However the ten-day training course was not enough to arrange advance and professional level course. But this course for beginner helped them to comprehend the basic knowledge on website development along with web accessibility issues.

This course not only helped the trainee but also helps us (the organizers) to understand the needs and develop our program for future.
